Maquettes are used as a drawing aid as it can be really helpful to have a 3D version of the character that can be moved around and viewed under different lights to see the kinds of shadows that are created. This is my maquette of my ninja cat which i created based on my digital turnaround I created in Photoshop.

ninja cat turn around

I began by cutting polystyrene into the basic shapes of the body, head and feet. I used four copper rods to stabilise the model and to fix it to a base. I covered everything in aluminium foil to act as a base before I put plasticine on. The entire time I was working from my turnaround.

I made his clothes from cloth and hand stitched pouches for his samurai swords, which were made from filed down copper rods.
