Thumbnail sketches are really good for brainstorming ideas. They are fast drawings with minimal detail intended to quickly get ideas onto a page.

So for my character I have decided to chose the Ninja Cat theme. So I began with doing some thumbnail sketches to brainstorm what the cat might look like.

I found it very important to draw the cat in very different poses to see which worked and which didn’t and to try and avoid repetition in my sketches.

I then started thinking about using shape imagery in the thumbnails to try and develop the cat’s character.

I came to the conclusion the cat looked much better composed of circles and curves and had the most appeal when I drew him like that.
